Privacy Policy

This is an art project. Nothing here asks you to type anything about yourself. The pieces remember where you are and what you chose, and that is almost all there is to know.
1. Information We Collect
- Your place, in your browser. The games keep your progress in this browser's local storage: positions, choices, and the colours or notes a game made with you. It stays on your device unless you move it (Bearings → Keep your place lets you save it to a file or copy it as text).
- If you sign in (optional). Signing in uses your The5 account (the same account as The5, Herdle, Price Check and TurdQuest). At sign-in, haze receives your account number, your display name and your account role from The5. It never receives your email address or your password.
- Your online place. When you are signed in, the same progress your browser keeps is also kept online, linked to your account number, so you can continue on another computer.
- Anonymous counts. Some moments are counted as plain daily totals: how many journeys reached a place, made one choice or another, or reached an ending. A count carries no account, no address and no identifier. If your browser has Do Not Track turned on, nothing is counted.
- Session cookie. A cookie called
haze_sessionkeeps you signed in. It exists only once you start signing in. It is haze's own; haze does not read or set the shared motes.org games cookie. - Usage analytics. We use Matomo, a self-hosted analytics tool, for basic page-view statistics. Matomo is configured with Do Not Track support, no cookies and no cross-site tracking.
- Server logs. Like any website, the server keeps ordinary logs (the time, the page, the address a request came from) for a short while, for security and to fix what breaks. When you visit through motes.org/haze, Cloudflare carries that traffic.
2. How We Use Your Data
- To keep your place, in your browser and, if you sign in, online.
- To let The5 accounts with the admin role see the anonymous totals: how the pieces are actually played, so they can be made better.
- To troubleshoot bugs and keep the site running.
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any commercial purpose. There is no view of any one player's choices, even for admins.
3. Data Sharing & Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data with anyone. There is no third-party advertising and no invasive tracking. Nothing haze keeps is sent to The5 or to any other site.
4. Email Contact
haze.motes.org never emails you. Your The5 account's email, and any account confirmation, is handled by The5 under its own privacy policy.
5. Cross-Site Authentication
Accounts belong to the shared motes.org / Hoofprint Games sign-in system, run by The5. When you sign in here, The5 hands haze a single-use pass that says who you are; haze checks it once and keeps only your account number, display name and role for the session. Your game progress here stays here.
6. Your Choices
- You never have to sign in. Every piece works fully without an account.
- You can delete your online place at any time, from the game's Bearings, and sign out there too.
- You can clear this browser's storage to remove the place kept on this device (save a copy first if you want it).
- Turn on Do Not Track to stop anonymous counting.
- You can request deletion of your online places, or of your The5 account and everything linked to it, by emailing us.
- If you are under 13, ask a parent or guardian before making a The5 account.
7. Security
Passwords are held by The5, never by haze, and are stored using industry-standard hashing. haze's own access to account data is limited to the account number, display name and role. We take reasonable measures to protect what is kept, but no system is perfectly secure.
8. Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
